I am Aiko KONOMI, an artisan lissière specializing in Aubusson tapestry.
I am Japanese, and my journey with textiles began at the age of 20, inspired by my grandmother. I learned the traditional
Japanese weaving technique Saga Nishiki, which uses fine strips of washi paper for the warp, coated with gold, silver, and
colored foils, along with natural resin, and silk for the weft.
I still have many of the materials inherited from my grandmother, which I incorporate into my work. For example, I blend
Japanese paper with wool for the Japanese rabbit, and use silk threads for the wine glasses. This technique is an integral
part of my personal history.
I studied dyeing and weaving at an art university in Kyoto (M.F.A. in Textile Arts), participating in numerous solo and group
exhibitions across Japan.
In 2014, I moved to Aubusson, France, where I obtained the professional certification (Certificat d’Aptitude
Professionnelle, CAP) in tapestry and weaving.
I then worked primarily with Atelier A2, contributing to the creation of over 25 works for public and private collections,
some of which are housed in museums.
In 2023, I founded my own atelier, Atelier A.KONOMI.
I have been awarded the official title of Artisan d’Art by the French Chamber of Trades andCrafts (CMA).
This distinction is granted to professionals who practice a recognised craft and contribute tothe preservation and transmission of traditional cultural know-how.
Based in Aubusson since 2014, I regard this recognition as an important milestone in ajourney dedicated to learning, creating and practicing the craft of Aubusson tapestry.
